Air Ventilation

To have a soothing sauna, there should be a proper mixing of hot and cold air inside the sauna room.

Another reason for ventilation is to draw air around the heater and to move the heat to the farthest part of the sauna. The positioning of the inlet and outlet vents may vary depending on the design of the sauna room or preference of the owner.

The inlet vent may be installed on the wall directly below the heater (as shown on the picture).

When using the mechanical ventilation, inlet vent is placed at least 60 cm above the heater or on the ceiling above the heater.

Through these positions, the heavy cold air that is blown into the sauna is mixed with the light hot air from the heater, bringing fresh air for the bathers. The inlet vent must have a diameter of 5-10cm (recommended).

The outlet vent should be placed diagonally opposite to the inlet. It is recommended that the outlet vent is placed under the bench in a sauna as far as possible from the fresh air vent. It may be installed near the floor, or led outside through a pipe from the floor going to a vent to the sauna ceiling, or under the door (to the washroom). In this case, the sill slot must be at least 5cm and it is recommended that there is mechanical ventilation in the washroom.

The size of the exhaust should be twice that of the inlet.

Use Only Clear Household Water from the Tap

The water poured on to the heated stones MUST be clean household water for example from the tap.

Chemically treated water may contain  calcareous which leaves a white, sticky layer on the stones and metal surfaces of the heater. Calcification of the stones deteriorates the heating properties.

It also may contain ferrous in the water which leaves a rusty layer on the surface of the heater and elements, and causes corrosion.

IMPORTANT: Do not use water from the swimming pools, spas or hot tubs as it contains chemicals such as chlorine, bromine or sea (salt) water. Using chemically treated water will cause severe damage to the sauna heater and its elements (not to mention that it is unsafe for your health).

Piling Sauna Stones

The main purpose of the stones in the heater unit is to store enough energy to efficiently vaporize the water thrown on top of the stones to maintain correct humidity in the sauna room. The stones must be changed at least once a year or every 500 hours which ever occurs first.

The heater stones should be solid blocks of stone specially intended for use in the heater. Neither light, porous ceramic “stones“ of the same size nor soft pot stones should be used in the heater, because they may cause the elements temperature to rise too high causing premature failure of the heating elements.

Stone dust should be washed off before piling the stones. The stones should be piled into the stone compartment over the grating, in between the heating elements so that the stones support each other. The weight of the stones should not lie on the heating elements.

The stones should not be piled too tightly to allow the air flow through the heater. The stones should be fitted loosely, and not wedged between the heating elements. Very small stones should not be put into the heater at all. The stones should completely cover the heating elements. However, they should not form a high pile on the elements.

IMPORTANT: Never use the heater without stones as it may cause fire. Use only manufacturer recommended stones. Using unsuitable stones may lead to heating element damage and normally will void the warranty. Never use ceramic stones or other artificial stones of any type!

The stones disintegrate with use. Therefore, they should be rearranged at least once a year or even more often if the sauna is in frequent use. At the same time, any pieces of stones and broken-stone debris should be removed from the stove heating chamber. All disintegrated stones should be replaced with new ones.

IMPORTANT: Do not place objects or devices inside or near the heater which could change the amount or direction of the air flowing through the heater, thus causing heater elements temperature to rise too high, which may set your sauna room on fire!

Choose Your Heater

Make sure the stove you have chosen is right for your sauna. A sauna room equipped with a suitable stove will be ready for bathing after it has been heated for a half an hour to an hour.

The heating of the sauna room depends on the size of the room, power of the stove and materials used in the walls and ceiling of the room.

Greater capacity of the stove is required if the wall and ceiling surfaces are un-insulated (brick, tile or concrete for example). In this situation each square meter of un-insulated material needs to be calculated as a 1.2 cubic meter in addition to the cubage of the sauna. If the walls of the sauna are timber logs, the additional cubage needs to be the original cubage multiplied by 0.5.

For example, a 10m³ sauna room with a 2m wide and 2m high brick wall equals a 14.8m³ sauna room. (2×2=4m²; 4×1.2=4.8m³ in addition to the original 10 m³)

A 10m³ sauna room with walls made of logs equals to a 15m³ sauna room and the stove has to be chosen accordingly. (10 m³ x 0.5=5 m³ in addition to the original 10m³)
